Project Awards

Charles Construction wins AGC 2005 Build Ohio Award for Owens Community College

Charles Construction Services has been selected as one of seven winners of a coveted AGC 2005 Build Ohio Award. The company was honored in the category of "New Construction Under $10 Million" for the Owens Community College Findlay Campus project. An independent panel of retired construction professionals selected the winner in each category based on the following criteria: Excellence in Project Management, Innovation in Construction, Excellence in Client Service, and Meeting the Challenges (of a difficult project).

This project included site development and construction of a new 120,000 sq. ft. educational facility. The building encompasses a library, advanced technology classrooms, technical and computer laboratories, bookstore, conferences rooms, and other student services areas. The focal point of the facility is The Jaguar Grill and its illuminated acrylic and seamless brushed aluminum sign.

Josh Huffman, Project Manager for Owens, received on behalf of Charles Construction, its bronze and green marble Build Ohio award during the 14th annual Build Ohio Celebration gala. The statue symbolizes both a look towards the future of construction in Ohio and the sturdiness of projects completed by AGC members.

ABC " Excellence in Construction" Award for

Birchaven Retirement Village

Charles Construction Services was awarded by the Northwest Ohio Associated Builders and Contractors an "Excellence in Construction" award for Birchaven Retirement Village. Projects were judged on the basis of overall presentation, photographs, contracted scope, safety, references, and supplemental materials.

Birchaven is a 190,000 sq. ft. facility designed and constructed to afford a continuum of retirement living options in a neighborhood setting. The "community" includes a main street with shops, diner, chapel, exercise facilities, library, two nursing wings, and an independent living apartment complex. Charles Construction Service was the only local contractor selected to undertake this $25.8 million project. A project of this scope and value had never previously been awarded to a Findlay area contractor. The architect for the project commented that of the 400 facilities like Birchaven that he has designed, this "is the best one..."

AGC "Build Ohio" Award for Birchaven Retirement Village

Charles Construction Services was recognized by the Associated General Contractors of Ohio for work performed at Birchaven Retirement Village. The company was awarded a "Build Ohio" award for new construction over $10 million. Entries were judged on project overview, project story, photographs, and display board.

Teamwork was essential to the success of this project. With over 222,000 man hours committed on-site, there were no reportable injuries or lost-time occurrences. This was accomplished through weekly tool-box safety talks on topics relevant to the current phase of construction, rigorous enforcement of safety rules, and mandated written safety plans from subcontractors.

"Build Ohio" was created in 1992 to recognize Ohio construction companies for their achievements. Today, it is known as one of the most prestigious construction awards program in the state.

ABC "Excellence in Construction" Award for Blanchard Valley Cancer Center

Charles Construction Services was selected as the General Contractor for construction of the $2.54 million Blanchard Valley Regional Cancer Center. This 18,000 sq. ft. facility houses two linear accelerators contained in massive concert vaults. Michelle Kerr (Administrative Director for the Cancer Center) wrote the following about Charles, "They have been a fabulous company to do business. They have been extremely diligent to details, very open to problems, extremely helpful to find solutions, and mindful of budgetary restrictions. I was extremely pleased with the pride of work involved."

The Northwest Ohio Associated Builders and Contractors awarded Charles Construction Services an "Excellence in Construction" award for their superior work on this project.

ABC "Excellence in Construction" Award for the Findlay YMCA

Charles Construction Services was awarded a Northwest Ohio Associated Builders and Contractors "Excellence in Construction" award for the Findlay YMCA project. Highlights of the completed renovation included an additional 20,000 sq. feet of programmable space, ADA accessibility, new and expanded locker rooms, an indoor running track surrounded by a Wellness Center, an enlarged aerobics center with resilient flooring, racquetball ball courts with viewing areas, age-appropriate youth centers, a new wood floor in the main gym, expansion of the parking lot, and asbestos replacement.

This project was a testimonial to the community spirit that pervades Findlay and Hancock County. The $8 Million project cost was almost entirely raised from contributions by local businesses and residents.

ABC “Excellence in Construction" National Award for The Ritz Theatre

Charles Construction Services was awarded by the Associated Builders and Contractors one of three national “Excellence in Construction” awards for historic restoration projects in the $2 - $99 Million category.  The winning project was The Ritz Theatre (Tiffin, Ohio) for which Charles Construction Services served as Construction Manager. Previously the ABC Northwest Ohio Chapter honored Charles Construction Services with an “Award of Excellence” for the Ritz project, the only entry in the regional competition to receive a score of 100% from the independent panel of judges.

Originally constructed in 1928, the Ritz was restored to reflect its Italian renaissance design. This included marble staircases, illuminated floor-to-ceiling murals, and an elegant 1200-lb. chandelier suspended from a sky-blue dome.

ABC’s awards program is designed to publicly recognize the quality and innovation of merit construction and to honor all the members of the construction team on the project. Winning projects were selected from entries submitted from across the country and were judged on the complexity, attractiveness, unusual challenges, completion time, workmanship, innovation, safety, budget, and endorsements from the client/owner. The competition was open to all construction projects by ABC members won at the regional level. An independent panel of judges, including representatives of the American Institute of Architects, and business leaders selected the winners in 33 categories.

“The project clearly illustrates the excellent work merit contractors do every day,” said then ABC President Ben Houston at the national convention in Maui, Hawaii. Associated Builders and Contractors is a national association consisting of 80 regional chapters of merit construction-related firms.
